Do you want to increase glutathione levels
in your body? Are you considering taking a glutathione IV
injection? Or do you want to know how to increase glutathione
in your body naturally? Then this is the video for you! Hello, I am Dr. Dhananjay Chavan, Cosmetic
Dermatologist and Hair Transplant surgeon, ClearSkin and Hair MD,
Pune. Before we find out more about glutathione,
let us find out how glutathione works. Glutathione is an important antioxidant that
helps destroy free radicals and removes harmful toxins from the body. That is why it is also called ‘master
antioxidant’. Glutathione is quite different from other
antioxidants because it is produced in our liver itself. Glutathione is present in every cell in our
body. Glutathione is very important for DNA synthesis,
Protein synthesis, Prostaglandins synthesis, Amino acid transport,
and so on. Moreover this is very important for enzyme
activation, that is the body’s metabolic and biochemical reactions. Glutathione is very important for each and
every system in the body. Glutathione deficiencies can especially affect
the immune system, nervous system and gastrointestinal system. So let us see how glutathione is formed in
the body and how it works. Glutathione is made from 3 amino acids – cysteine,
glycine, and glutamine. These amino acids have sulphur. This sulphur acts like a sponge and
attaches itself to any toxin and helps your body to get rid of all these
harmful chemicals. This also supports your immune system and
reduces infections. Along with this glutathione increases cytokine
production which reduces the number of cytotoxic cells in the body. Glutathione is also very helpful in keeping
vitamin E and C in active form. Moreover, it helps to maintain the physical
and mental health. It helps to prevent cancer, heart problems,
and brain diseases. Glutathione is very important to keep your
body healthy and it is very important to maintain it at the right level
in the body. But nowadays we are influenced by the effectiveness
of glutathione on our skin color and pigmentation along with its
anti ageing effects and try to use it more. So let us see how glutathione works for our
skin. Glutathione prevents ageing or slows down
the ageing process and helps to maintain healthy skin. This also protects you from pollution and
free radical damage. Free radicals damage your cells and tissues
and cause wrinkles, signs of ageing and makes your skin look dull. Glutathione slows down the ageing process
and helps to get younger looking skin. This glutathione is also quite effective in
skin lightening. Tyrosinase
deactivates glutathione and helps to reduce pigmentation. Your skin color
depends on a lot of factors other than genetics, the most important factor
being melanin. Melanin is the pigment that gives skin its
color. The color of your skin
depends on the melanin production. Melanin is produced by cells called melanocytes. When these melanocytes start producing excess
melanin pigment, your skin gets darker. And when the melanin production reduces your
skin color gets lighter. Glutathione has anti melanogenic properties. It controls the excess
production of melanin. It converts the darker eumelanin pigment into
the lighter pheomelanin. This causes your skin to become lighter and
fairer. That is why glutathione is very effective
for skin lightening. It also helps to reduce skin pigmentation,
blemishes and light spots. A lot of people use glutathione for skin lightening. Eating glutathione tablets for 4-6 months
has given patients good results. But always consult a doctor before taking
glutathione tablets. Glutathione is not available only in pill
form. It is also available in injections,
creams, inhaler, lotions, and beauty soaps. It is quite popular. These also have vitamins, soya oils, proteins
and minerals that help to nourish your skin. But a big disadvantage of using artificial
supplements is that their use reduces the natural glutathione production
in the body. Dependency on an external source is not beneficial
in the long run. So avoid taking artificial supplements for
a long duration. It is better to increase the natural glutathione
production. Only glutathione
pills or injections are not enough to keep your skin fair and glowing. Your complexion cannot get fairer. You also have to eat a healthy balanced diet
with fresh fruits and vegetables. This can help your skin become glowing and
fair, Your pigmentation, age spots, acne and even
scars can reduce. But sometimes the glutathione levels in the
body reduce. So let’s find out what causes this glutathione
deficiency. Sometimes the glutathione production gets
disrupted due to an increase in the level of harmful chemicals or toxins. Often, even the natural ageing process results
in a decrease in glutathione levels. Unavoidable external factors like pollution,
toxins, drugs, bacterial or viral infections, radiation may also result in a
reduction of glutathione levels in the body. A lot of people use glutathione supplements,
injections, or inhalers to increase glutathione levels in their body. When you take glutathione supplements, your
body starts depending on these supplements which results in a decrease
in the natural production of glutathione. It is better that you increase glutathione
levels naturally. The natural
production can be increased and this is what is better. So how can you increase glutathione levels
naturally? First you will have to bring about some changes
in your lifestyle. You will
have to follow a healthy diet and regular exercise. Eat glutathione rich foods to increase the
natural production of glutathione in your body. Add high quality proteins like lean protein
to your diet. These have a higher
amount of amino acids, they help to naturally increase glutathione
production. Some of the non-veg sources of lean proteins
are fish, eggs, low-fat mutton, pork, and vegetarian sources are tofu,
soya products, beans, lentils, nuts, low-fat antibiotic & hormone-free
dairy products, paneer, and yogurt. Eat fresh fruits and vegetables. These have good levels of glutathione,
however, cooking results in a loss of 30-60% of the glutathione. That is why you should eat fresh and raw vegetables. Potatoes, bell
peppers, avocados, carrots, onions, spinach, garlic, tomatoes, apples,
oranges, bananas, and melons also have glutathione. Along with this you should use spices like
turmeric, cinnamon, cumin, and cardamom as these boost the enzymatic action
of glutathione. You should also include selenium in your diet
as this helps to increase the level of glutathione peroxidase. This has a molecule called cystine that aids
in glutathione production. Selenium is available in sunflower seeds,
oats, walnuts, legumes, cheese, eggs and brown rice. You can also take
selenium supplements. Along with this you should increase the intake
of alpha lipoic acid or ALA as this helps to promote glutathione synthesis. Spinach, tomatoes, rice bran, peas are good
sources of ALA. You can also
take ALA supplements but always consult with a doctor first. Your diet cannot give you all your nutrients. That is why you may have to take supplements
in your old age. You can
balance out the glutathione with multivitamins. Take multivitamin supplements that have Vitamin
C, Vitamin E, Vitamin B6, Vitamin B12, Folates, Selenium, Magnesium,
and Zinc. Diet, nutrition and exercise all play an important
role in increasing the glutathione level naturally. Only the right diet or eating supplements
won’t be enough. Regular exercise helps to improve the metabolism,
blood circulation and reduces oxidative stress. It also helps to remove the harmful chemicals
and toxins from the body. This stimulates glutathione production. You can start
off with exercises like jogging, swimming and cycling. Glutathione production depends on ATP or adenosine
triphosphate. This
ATP provides energy to your cells and exercise keeps the ATP molecule
active. Any type of exercise like aerobics or weight
training helps to increase the glutathione level. Along with exercising, it is important to
manage your stress and sleep well. Apart from this, there are certain medical
therapies and treatments that are available to increase glutathione production. These glutathione supplements are available
in oral, inhalant or injection form. But these are generally used in serious diseases
like anemia, Parkinson’s disease, diabetes mellitus or
cancer. Oral glutathione is not very effective. Intravenous glutathione is an invasive, expensive
and effective treatment. But taking glutathione may have life threatening
side effects. IV glutathione has been banned for skin lightening
in many countries as it may cause severe reactions and result in a
loss of life. It may even cause
severe skin rashes, thyroid and kidney dysfunction, even renal failure. Patients may experience abdominal pain and
discomfort along with infections. If the doctor or staff giving the injections
is not trained, there may be chances of fatal air embolism and fatal sepsis
or infections because of the IV injections. Till now IV glutathione has only been approved
by the FDA for use as an adjunct therapy to reduce neurotoxicity associated
with cisplatin chemotherapy – these are only given at specialised
centers. Other places that give IV glutathione are
not FDA approved. Not a lot of
research has been done on the benefits of IV glutathione on skin, so taking
this may be risky. In some patients, the hair color may also
lighten along with the skin color and may even become blond. Multiple hypopigmented or light patches may
appear on sun exposed areas like face and arms and are unsightly. This may also cause a zinc deficiency and
increase the chances of peptic ulcers. There are also chances of fair people getting
a dangerous cancer called melanoma. This can result in a zinc deficiency. In certain conditions, glutathione should
not be used. Let us take a look at who should avoid glutathione. If you suffer from asthma you shouldn’t
inhale glutathione. If you have recently had an organ transplant,
avoid glutathione supplements. Avoid glutathione during pregnancy and lactation. Don’t take any medication without consulting
your doctor. Confirm if you have a glutathione deficiency
and if glutathione supplements are the right choice for you. Only your doctor can recommend the treatment
and medication after assessing your health and skin. IV glutathione has given good results for
skin pigmentation in fair people. But as it is not FDA approved, has severe,
adverse, and life threatening side effects, majority of the consultants
don’t use it. I hope you got the information about glutathione

with a doctor before taking any medicine or undergoing any treatment. Nowadays there is a
lot of buzz around glutathione. Glutathione is definitely
beneficial for the other functions of the body but it is especially effective for
skin lightening. Intravenous injections are very useful for
skin lightening but there is no scientific evidence about its efficacy. No one can say that glutathione is
100% safe for you as it can have life threatening side effects. That is why it is better to avoid taking glutathione
injection and avoid the dependency. It is better to produce glutathione naturally
in your body with
the right diet and
a healthy and fit lifestyle. It is important to find out if you even have
a glutathione deficiency. If you
need it follow the doctors suggestions regarding diet, lifestyle, medicine
and supplements to increase glutathione production. All the best! Thank you!
