Kid Science – Fun with acids & bases

Hi. My name is Brad Landgraf, and I’m a scientist
here at NEB. Today, we have two demonstrations for you
to teach your students about having fun with acids and bases. The first demonstration uses red cabbage juice
as a pH indicator. Acidic solutions turn the cabbage juice reddish-pink,
and basic solutions turn the cabbage juice to a yellowish-green color. The second experiment we’re going to do demonstrates
a neutralization reaction. In this reaction, we have rocks made out of
sodium bicarbonate, and we’re going to be dipping them in vinegar or acetic acid. When those two chemicals combine, they form
water and CO2. What you’ll see is bubbles form from the CO2
that’s formed from the neutralization.
