Victor the Polar Bear’s Health Check-up

Morning everyone! We’ve had a busy day here at Project Polar. Victor, our biggest and heaviest Polar Bear
at Project Polar is a middle aged chap and is due a little bit of an MOT. So we have the vet team here this morning
and we’ve even managed to get a little bit of help from our local fire service. because Victor weighs in at a staggering 620
kilos. So we thought we may need a little bit of
help lifting him into position to help the vets do do their work. Hi i’m Simon Marsh, Animal Collections Manager
here at Yorkshire Wildlife Park. The carnivore team started doing some husbandry
behavioural training to make sure Victor was comfortable and happy enough to come into
the house and be hand injected through the bars at the front of their den. Victor has been doing this training with the
staff here for several months now and this is a combination of being able to inject him
with the anaesthetic drug before we started the veterinary procedure. There was eleven fire men and several YWP
rangers to help lift Victor onto the operating table. Once he was there he was put on the anaesthetic
machine and the vets and dentist could get to work doing all of the veterinary procedures
they needed to make sure Victor was a very happy and healthy bear. The veterinary procedure involved a specialist
zoo dentist, several vets from different practices and the rangers at Yorkshire Wildlife Park
plus South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue service. So the planning involved took about a month
to bring all of these people together, all different specialists and different teams
together. On Friday morning combined in everyone arriving,
setting up all their equipment (which took two hours at least!) and once the vets had
finished their procedures we could then move him off the table and do the reversal to help
Victor recover from the anaesthetic. Now Victor has fully recovered within half
an hour he was up and about and now he is out and is out and about in his reserve enjoying
life again at Yorkshire Wildlife Park.
